David Adkins’ directorial credits include “Sister Act” (Amici Trust & G&T Productions – ASB
Waterfront Theatre), “Miss Saigon” (NSMT – The Civic Theatre), “Slice of Saturday Night” (NSMT,
AMT), and currently David is directing “Kinky Boots The Musical – NZ” (Amici Trust & G&T
Productions – The Civic Theatre, Auckland & St James Theatre, Wellington).
An Introduction to Directing Musicals is open as either a one or two day workshop, held at the NSMT
Clubrooms (5 Recreation Drive, Birkenhead) and aimed at both new directors and experienced
directors looking to refresh their knowledge.
Day 1: Conversation and Theory (July 29, 9:30am-4:00pm) is open to all participants and will cover:
– The roles of the management team (Director, Musical Director, Choreographer, Production Manager etc)
– What does a director actually do
– The rehearsal schedule
– Preparing and meetings
– Auditions
– Rehearsals
– Blocking
– Common directing errors
– Dealing with Conflict
– And more!
This day is highly recommended for anyone who works with Directors, ie MD’s, Choreographers, Production Managers and Committee Members.
Day 2: Practical Directing (July 30, 10:00am-3:30pm) is limited to 12 participants who must also have attended Day 1. This day will cover:
– Practical exercise with participants directing each other using scripts and exercises provided the day before. A chance to put in place the learning’s of the previous day.
Attendance of Day 1 is $30 (open to all)
Attendance of both Day 1 and 2 is $50 (strictly limited to the first 12 participants).
